This piece is for clarinet, with string quartet accompaniment, and includes conductor's score and parts for clarinet, violin I, violin II, viola, and cello.
The music sounds modern, almost avant-garde with its modulations, unexpected accidentals and time signature changes. Still it's well written to be playable on the clarinet. Much of it, including the opening theme, is played in the somber lower register. A rich, dark, dramatic piece for performance.
