These technique-oriented etudes are each a page or two in length and remind us of Rose's second book of studies. All are written in the key of C and key/chord changes are accomplished using accidentals. They are interesting chromatically and are more technical than tuneful.
Liner notes: "This series of studies is destined to familiarze clainetists with the modes of limited transposition, so dear to Olivier Messiaen. Each study is based on one of the seven modes or on one of their transpositions and preliminary exercises are recommended before each study. These exercises should involve the modes in scales so as to facilitate later reading of this particular musical language."
